Top on the list of any Higher Education institution’s priorities is what their students really think of their studying experience. With the What Uni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs), we give the student voice a platform, sharing the realities of the student experience with the world and celebrating the UK institutions that have gone above and beyond.
Over the last six months, our WhatUni review collection team collected over 41,000 student reviews from 150 institutions and travelled a record-breaking 46,000 miles across the UK – all to promote the student voice and give institutions some well-deserved recognition!
All that hard work will bear fruit on July 8th with the 2020 Whatuni Student Choice Awards this year held on the @Whatuni Twitter feed, where the Universities and Higher Education providers that students rated the highest will be celebrated across 15 different awards categories, 13 review-based and 2 submission-based.
With the WUSCAs, every aspect of the student experience is considered from the courses and lecturers to the facilities, student union, and even how much an institution has given back to society. This year, the WUSCAs are being hosted by the one and only Claudia Winkleman via the Whatuni Twitter feed, in what’s sure to be a fantastic digital event.
We’re delighted to announce our WUSCA 2020 shortlist for the 13 reviews-based categories below:
The shortlist for submission based entries will be confirmed soon after the submission deadline on March 16th.

2020 has been another bumper year in terms of both the number of reviews collected and the number of institutions participating. Margaret Wajnkaim, the Project Coordinator of the review collection team, said “This year, we have been focusing on the value and the importance of reviews on WhatUni, wanting to make this year our best review collection yet. It has been a rewarding experience, collecting over 41,000 reviews for the past 6 months with the help of my dedicated team. It is a great feeling knowing that these will help so many prospective students through their higher education research journey.”
You can download the shortlist here.
Leading up to the prestigious ceremony, we’ll also be hosting the Whatuni Insights Day where Higher Education representatives can come together to discuss the headline trends from the collected student reviews and explore the UK recruitment landscape.

About the Whatuni Student Choice Awards – #WUSCA
Now in its 7th year, the Whatuni Student Choice Awards’ main categories are compiled entirely from student reviews. The reviews are a combination of electronic and physically collected reviews by the Whatuni team, who this year travelled 46,000 miles. The results are both quantitative (scores) and qualitative (free text) and the total reviews for 2019/20 collected exceeded 41,000.
The reviews-based categories are Accommodation, Clubs & Societies, Courses & Lecturers, FE College, Independent HE, International, Job Prospects, Local Life, Postgraduate, Student Support, Students’ Union, Uni Facilities, and the big one covering overall experience University of the Year.
The additional submission-based categories, as judged by the Whatuni Student Advisory Board, are Giving Back and Prospective Student Engagement.
To feature in the main table categories, institutions have to have taught degree-awarding powers. The threshold for featuring in the main categories is 150-200 reviews, depending on institution size. The FE College and Independent HE categories have lower thresholds.
