New ‘perfect match’ app from Whatuni simplifies university Clearing for students

University comparison website Whatuni has launched a new app feature allowing students a fuss-free way to find a university place that matches their preferences and then secure it straight from their smartphones. The new ‘perfect match’ feature removes the stress of a long-winded and confusing hunt for university places during clearing and adjustment, which will hit a peak on A-Level results day, 16 August this year.

Personalised search

The Whatuni app allows students to personalise a search for courses based on their grades as well as location, career and subject preferences. The app then uses those preferences to present students with a bespoke list of options that matches their requirements. Students can then call universities directly through the app – making the process as simple and pain-free as possible.
Jonah Duffin, Hotcourses Group Chief Marketing Officer, said: “The Whatuni app is making clearing and adjustment super-streamlined and student-driven. Students are matched with detailed course information based on their achievements and long-term goals, and have the ability to easily compare courses and institutions. It means they feel more confident in making those university phone-calls.”

The feature is part of a wider Whatuni #makethefirstmove social campaign that seeks to break the outdated stigma associated with clearing and encourage students to be proactive during the process. Students are in a much more powerful position than they might imagine, with universities keen to fill their lecture theatres in an increasingly competitive sector. In 2017 universities filled over 27,000 places through clearing and adjustment.

Julia Day, Hotcourses Group Director of Marketing and Content, said: “Many parents remember clearing from their own school days as a last-ditch attempt to get into a university, any university! But it’s not the same today. Clearing and adjustment covers all sorts of situations, from late applications to people trading up when they’ve done better than expected. We want to help students get in to university and then get on with their lives.”

The ‘perfect match’ feature is available from now until September, when clearing and adjustment ends. The Whatuni app has been downloaded more than 20,000 times since its launch last year and was recently listed #1 on the iTunes weekly favourite apps #4 in the Apple Store’s New Apps We Love feature. It is available to download on iTunes and Google Play.
